Today we have the talented, creative and beautiful Lady Noctis! She is a model and illustrator and loves to bring her art into her modelling! Enjoy the feature!

-Interview

Welcome to Design Splat Lady Noctis!

Tell us a bit about what you do:

My alias is Lady Noctis, I am a petite creative model with big ambitions exploring the world through the eyes of art.
I currently reside within the Swansea area where I am currently studying a BA (hons) General Illustration, and I love expressing myself with my art may it be on a page or in front of the camera; I hope to create illustrations of captured moments in time. I love to create quirky, surreal, comic, fantasy styled illustrations. Art is my love in life, it keeps me happy and I wish to use it to bring a smile to others.

Model Interview:

What type of modelling do you do?

I am fascinated by steampunk, gothic, macabre and fantasy works and looks to work within these areas. In addition to this I also enjoys playing a role when modelling and pefers to do shoots that have a strong sense of narrative; so the viewer can enjoy the image just as much as I enjoyed creating it.

What made you venture into modelling?

My first taste of modelling took place in March last year when I helped out in a local models project recreating a scene from the famous film The Labyrinth. The shoot consisted of non-models, along with many photographers and an artist (Angel Illustrations), who would later be using the images taken from the day as reference material to create a beautiful piece of digital art.

It was then from that moment, I caught the modelling bug, and learnt that I enjoyed expressing myself in front of the camera.

How long have you been modelling for?

As mentioned previously, I had my first taste back in March 09; but it was not until November 09 that I started fully exploring the industry.

Whats your dream ambition?

My dream ambition actually consists of a molding my modelling and art as one. I wish to create my own clothing range of pin up zombies, and model the items in order to make a name and face for my art work. In addition to this, I would love to be in Bizarre magazine, Gothic Beauty magazine etc.

Who would be your dream model to do a photoshoot with?

Oh my that is a really tough choice, it would either be Nina Kate or Ulorin Vex. There are so many beautiful creatives within the industry it’s really difficult to choose.

Who would be your dream photographer to do a photoshoot with?

Again, another really tough question, there is one photographer I have always wanted to work with (Scott Chalmers); but I am luckily having the chance to work with him come September. In addition to him, I would love to work with YUKIdoll Photography, Dark Romantics Photography, and Taya Uddin. There are just so many I would love to work with I cannot simple choose one.

What would you say is your best feature?

I would have to say my eyes, as they tend to be an odd mix of hazel and amber.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully in my own art studio creating my graphic novel series, and still modelling hopefully got myself a cover on Bizarre magazine by then.

In your opinion what does it take to become successful in the modelling industry?

Determination, thick skin and self belief.

Is the modelling industry difficult to break into?

It most certainly is, it’s a mighty big pond. I am even still breaking my way in, it takes time.

Any tips/advice you would like to share with aspiring models?

Stay true to yourself, and never do anything you are not comfortable with. Do not be afraid to have fun, if you are not enjoying your shoot this will reflect in your eyes; so make sure you always enjoy what you do.

Any current or future projects you can tell us about?

I have many shoots booked over the next few months, and even an exciting book launch of an artist known as Angel whose book I am featured in. Also as mentioned previously, I have the chance to shoot with Scott Chalmers so I am very excited about this; we are doing a Victoria Frances tribute piece, and also working on some latex shoots. In addition to this I am also in talks with Mort Couture about an exciting steampunk project I have underwraps.

When you are not modelling what are you doing?

I am creating art.

Favourite piece you’ve created?

It’s always really difficult to choose, but I do love the sets I did with Eastern Visions Photography. There is something about that series that are really dark and sinister. I am also in love with ‘Key To My Heart’ by Angel Illustrations which is the cover of his book launch in Swansea.

Worst piece?

I hate to sit here and pick a worse piece, so I will not as I see each piece created as a learning curve for myself and the photographer.

What are the worst conditions you have ever had to work in?

A cold foggy day, bare foot and cow poo…. I will leave the rest to your imagination.

What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?

Stay true to myself, and never do anything I am not 100% comfortable with doing.

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe?

That would be my corsets, and of course my Harley Quinn Costume; what can I say I am a geek at heart.

—————-

-Illustration Interview

How did you get into Illustration?

The question should be when was I not into Illustration, as I can honestly not tell you. It has always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

When creating illustrations, what to you is the most important aspect: planning design or implementation? and why?

For me both aspects are just as important as the other, as you need both to work together in order to execute an outstanding piece of work.

Do you create your pieces by hand or with the use of the computer? Or both?

I am a traditional artist, I create my pieces by hand, though I am looking to start taking my pen work to the computer.

Where do you get inspiration for your illustrations?

Everywhere, you can find inspiration all around you.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully working in my own studio on my projects.

What’s the dream ambition?

As mentioned before, I want to design my own clothing line and have a graphic novel series out.

Does fame attract you?

Honestly, no it does not. I just want to create pieces of art to bring a smile to others.

How do you rate yourself as a illustrator/artist?

I am a tiny fish in a mighty big pond.

What makes a good illustrator?

Hard work and determination.

Do you think the design Industry will be difficult to get into? Are you worried about the amount of competition?

Of course I am, but I think with the right steps I will find my own way into the industry.

What do you think it takes to become successful in the Illustration industry?

To bring something new, and to have the skills to produce quality work.

Three words to describe yourself?

Quirky, geeky and creative.

Hobbies and Interests?

Well to state the obvious… art.
As well as that, I love gaming, music, comic books etc.

Favourite Illustrator?

Luis Royo, Victoria Frances, Tara Mcphearson, Angel, Jason Chan and many more.

Tools of the trade?

Pens and Acrylic inks

Best and worst piece of work?

Best – Probably project zombie
Worst - Pandora graphic novel page 1-2

Any Tips or advice to share with aspiring designers?

Find your own voice and with that you will shine.

Today we have our second Singer/Songwriter interview in the history of Design Splat! These are two very talented people who were in school with me and have continued with their passion for singing and song writing. Check out their Myspace page and listen to their songs! Enjoy!

- Interview

Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Chloe and Meecon aka The Razzled Squirell Project!

How did you get into song writing and singing?

Something we’ve both done from a young age! wanting to imitiate the people from TV and CDs.

Where did the name The Razzled Squirrel Project come from?

We both made a list of names… we found it funny how no one could say this one…and it stuck!

Are you signed or unsigned at the moment?

Unsigned

How would you describe your music to people?

Acoustic with ska, punk and folky influences. We have quite an ecclectic style but we’d like to say that it’s feel good music that’s easy to listen to!

What are your songs about?

We have written a couple of sing-along pub type songs, which are fun, but we also have some about slightly more serious matters like love, loss and songs about things that happen in day to day life and things that you see on the news!!

What image do you think your music conveys?

We try to make people happy through listening to our music…

What or who is the influence for your music?

We’ve got so many influences! King Blues are a big influence, with out them we wouldnt have even heard what a ukulele was, or how acoustic music could sound so full of energy! The ”juno” soundtrack!! err…Jesse Lacey from brand new because his lyrical talent seems to show no end. Billy Bragg because of his simple and catchy songs and because of what he believes in and the fact that his songs have a message. Dropkick Murphys,Ssublime, Mumford and Sons. Pretty much every band in the uk ska/punk scene!

Who is your target audience?

Open minded people with a wide range of musical taste and anyone who’ll take a few minutes out of their day to give a new band a quick listen!

Which part of creating music is the most important to you? The writing of the lyrics, the beat or performing?

All these things are important factors- the songs as a whole have to be good to begin with, but putting on a live show and having good stage presence is also important.

How do you know when a song is good?

You just know… it feels right and we cant stop playing it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Not selling our souls for minimum wage.

How do you rate yourself as a singers/song writers?

We’re not the best but we get better with every new song we write.

In your eyes what makes a good singer/song writer?

Someone who writes about things which actually matter and stuff people can relate to! Also people who write their own songs and dont just steal the credit from someone else.

Do you think the Music Industry is becoming more and more difficult to break into?

With the internet it makes it easier to be heard but that also means there are more artists out there wanting to be heard, which makes it harder!

What do you think it takes to become successful in the Music industry?

A good demo, a whole lotta luck and the balls to go for it.

What drives you/give you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?
It’s fun!!

What level of fame do you aspire to reach?

We want our faces carved on the moon!!

Where can we buy/download your music?

From myspace…its freeee

http://www.myspace.com/razzledsquirrelprojectuk

Do you have any new releases coming up?

We’re working on our new ep at the moment with a very talented producer and good friend Aaron Perry.

Three words to describe yourself?

Fun, Determined and Passionate about music

Hobbies and other interests?

BMX, Xbox(COD!), Fancy dress parties, Holistic Therapies, Writing, Drawing.

Favourite singer/songwriter?

Too many to name!!

Tools of the trade?

Two guitars, a ukulele, a stylophone and Aaron Perry.

Any Tips or advice to share with aspiring singer/songwriters?

Don’t give up! we started out with songs that we knew wernt exactly great, people would think it was a bit of a joke, but we stuck at it because we loved playing and its something we’re really passionate about and now people are actually starting to listen and take us a bit more seriously!

Welcome to Design Splat Susan!

How did you get into Art?

I was always interested in drawing and sketching but it was a friend that introduced me to the art class at our local community centre, this is where I was show how to use oil paints and where I completed my first painting.

How long have you been creating art?

The first painting was approx. 25 years ago. However it will be around 8 years when I started to create my own original paintings.

What does art mean to you?

A form of relaxation and enjoyment.

Where do the images come from that you draw/paint?

All around really, outside, holidays I’ve been on, from skies. Everything we see around us, just taking notice when I’m out walking or in a car.

What is your inspiration for these images you create?

Sounds like the same question, inspiration I guess would be from all the different colours. But I guess I’d also have to sat listening to music while painting, doesn’t seem to go together but it works for me.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Still enjoying what I’m doing now with more ideas and inspiration.

What drives you/gives you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

The enjoyment of painting. Also when I’m out exhibiting, hearing people’s comments and feedback keeps me going as it’s lovely to hear different views. Maybe I should start to do something more exciting as it’s usually “It’s very calming”.

Can you recall the first painting/drawing that you created that made you go WOW!?

I don’t actually know. Maybe…My snow and mountain scene, which was in oil as it was different from my previous paintings and thoroughly enjoyed painting this particular one.

What is the most memorable painting/drawing that you have done and why?

Probably was my snow one…and why? Hmm,probably because I fully enjoyed painting that one. Let about it, it’s where I got the paint to blend and got perspective and distance to the painting, oh and the colour.

Does fame attract you?

*shakes head* I don’t think so, I don’t like the attention.

How do you rate yourself as an artist?

Average, I don’t really know. Just willing to learn, I enjoy what I do, if other people get pleasure out of what I do then that’s a bonus but never really thought about it.

What makes a good artist?

Dedication…patience…for them to paint something and for someone else to be able to enjoy and feel something when
they look at it.

Do you paint or draw on anything else apart from canvases/on paper?

I do paint on ceramics, tried painting on slate, got pebbles which I was meant to try painting on but never got round to it. But I do like canvases the best.

Three words to describe yourself?

Quiet, patient and friendly

Hobbies and other interests?

I like my keep fit, reading and gardening

Favourite artist?

Charlotte Atkinson

Any Tips and tricks you want to share with aspiring artists?

Persevere and get plenty of practice.

Tools of the trade?

Nothing that nobody else uses really, don’t use anything unusual.

Best and worst painting you have done?

I think my best one was probably an oil I did, it was in gold’s and yellows with trees. My worst one was probably a village scene I did, still in the loft *laughs* probably will go back to it one day though.

Today we have the fun, quirky and colourful jewellery creations from Clutterfly! They are absolutely gorgeous and are all handmade! Check out the interview and be sure to visit their website!

- Interview

Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Clutterfly Jewellery!

Now to get the readers started how did you get into hand-making jewellery?

It was completely by accident! We were both Unemployed and had been job searching for months! So due to boredom we decided we should have a hobby! As it turns out it was making jewellery! We Decided to try and earn a few pennies by putting them on myspace and within a month we were contacted by various companies about stocking them. It was a complete suprise but gradually the company just continued to grow. We were very lucky to have a friend Paul who run Tropica Web Design who offered to build a website for free for us. Without Paul we may not be where we are today as it was their kindness that helped us start out.

Where did the name Clutterfly Jewellery come from?

When we started Clutterfly we were jobless and skint! so we started taking our old Jewellery and turning it into something new basically making clutter into something pretty like a butterfly! haha

What inspires you and influences your designs?

Our biggest influences are tattoos, Mexican, Burlesque and anything nautical. We are both a little crazy when it comes to tattoos and i think it reflects in our work, sometimes it’s not always a good thing! haha

Which product is your personal favourite?

My personal favourite is anything in the Day of the Dead range. I adore anything mexican which explains the vast colour ranges we have!

How long does it take to make one product?

It depends on what it is our products can take anything from an hour to five hours to make. We dont limit ourselves when it comes to time which sometimes is at our own detrement!

Do you see the market expanding for handmade jewellery products?

I think the market for handmade jewellery has been growing for years but its becoming increasingly harder to find anything original. I think that people under estimate how hard it is and unfortunately the market is becoming saturated with crudly made items which i feel is giving the handmade market a bad name

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

5 years older and slightly more wrinkly! haha I want to continue to grow the brand and move into other avenues such as clothing and homeware. Currently we are stocking other small businesses who handmake everything, i would like to play a bigger part in helping other small companies to grow by supporting them and advising them what to do and more importantly what NOT to do!

Any new exciting products being added to jewellery collection?

We are currently working with Diablo Jo’s(http://www.diablojos.com), collarorating on Fascinators that will incorporate our hearts with her unique style that will be fantastic! There are always so many ideas but very little time to make them a reality.

What drives you/gives you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

Before we started Clutterfly I worked in a joke shop and used every resource and bit of energy to help the business grow, unfortunately it was a very thankless job. Now everyday i get to see the fruits of my labour and im proud of what we have achieved so far but its not yet enough i know i can do better! It can be disheartening sometimes but all I need is one bit of good news or a lovely email from a customer and it puts the wind back in my sails!

Does fame attract you?

Not at all! I hate the fame game and i dont understand it personally. I’m all for our company becoming a household name as long as i can stay in the background!

How do you rate yourself as a jewellery designer/maker?

Well we wouldn’t ever say that we were 100% as theres always something that can be improved. Obviously we cant be all bad as people like our designs. I would never want to think we were perfect as i think a little self doubt drives you to do better.

What makes a good handmade product?

There are 3 things that make a good handmade product.

Ideas, Design and Materials.

Its good if you have an idea but to make it great you have to have the ability to produce it well and obviously the quality of materials make a huge difference.

Do you cater for custom designs?

Pretty much everything on our website can be customised from text, colour and size. Some customers have actually given us some of our best ideas, its great to have a clutterfly free mind sometimes tocome in andpoint out the obvious!

Where can we buy your products?
Our Products can all be found on our website http://www.clutterflyjewellery.com where you can also find a list of all our stockists.

Three words to describe yourself?

Friendly, Passionate and ever so slightly common!

Hobbies and other interests?

Its very sad but Clutterfly takes up most of my time. If im not working I feel lost! You can guarantee 7 days a week 12 hours a day I will be working on something clutterfly based!

Favourite jewellery company?

I have so many! I love Femme Metale and Classic Hardware but I have recently discovered a new company that specialises in handmade gold/silver and platinum jewellery called Purple Poison. I met her at Tattoo Jam this year and could have bancrupted myself if i had bought everything i wanted! She can customise most things and her designs are so unique! Also for quirky fun items I adore Diablo Jos! She has some of the most amazing designs and all with a price tag that wont make you feel guilty for treating yourself!!

Any tips and tricks you want to share with aspiring designers?

There are so many! We always try and help anyone who asks. The best tip I can give is if you have a great idea get it out there and make sure people know who you are! You will Get people who will copy your designs but your customers will always remain loyal to you as long as they know where to find you! Also Im part of a group on facebook called Business Buddies where we all go to help each other and share advice I cant recommend this enough as it’s a great way to build contacts and find out first hand whether something works or not!

Best and worst product you have made?

Oh god! we have made some mistakes! We designed this amazing mounted antlers pendant a while ago. It looked great but it was to fragile and the antlers snapped within seconds! The best has to be The Hearts! They are such a basic idea but we were lucky enough to capture the market and have bulit our company around them.

-Interview

Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Mike!

Tell us a bit about what you do:

I am a freelance cartoonist/illustrator, creating eye-catching artwork for business and personal
purposes. I am the creator of “Celebrity Clerks”, a single panel comic strip depicting people of
note at the cash register of a convenience store. I have recently dabbled in combining cartoons with photo backgrounds.

How did you get into creating Cartoons and at what age?

Creating cartoons was the natural evolution of my drawing from a young age. My earliest recollection is from about four years old, laying on the cement porch, the bumpy surface serving as my first drawing board. Simple stick figures with hands resembling comb rakes. A forefinger at the ready, ants that ventured on the page became squished, abstract addition to the picture, my first mix media pieces. I later progress to the kitchen table, copying comics from the newspaper. There was much joy in Antville.

When creating cartoons, what to you is the most important aspect: planning design or implementation? and why?

Planning the design, having a clear idea makes putting it down on paper a much easier task. When everything is in the “zone” initially, the drawing shoots out the pencil and gets fine tuned. It is a pleasant experience.

What obstacles – if any, have you encountered along the way?

Being a freelance cartoonist is an is a buffet of obstacles. And it’s “All you can eat”. Notes of rejection, creative block. “where’s my pencil ????”. It can be frustrating. But, commissions come, ideas spark and “Oh !! There’s my pencil !!! ” It works out fine.

Do you create your pieces by hand or with the use of the computer? Or both?

I always start with pencil on paper and ink with a black fine line marker. This creates an important connection to the drawing that carries through after it’s scanned into a graphic program too add colour, shade, highlights and text. Traditionally a “colour by hand” kind of guy, it took some getting used to digital colour and only use just the basics, not too interested in many of the “bells and whistles” that might give a drawing an overworked look or a little too slick. As I gain more experience, I’m sure I’ll experiment with more tools. From time to time I’ll do a “just pencil” rendering. It’s good to get right back to basics.

What was the hardest technique for you to learn as a cartoonist?

Caricature. I had a tendency to try a little too hard to get a resemblance to the subject. A forced drawing, is a bad drawing. With caricature, it’s all about spontaneity. With some practice and adjustments, I am moving towards capturing the physical essence and personality of the person.

What’s your favorite part of being a cartoonist?

It’s the most versatile art form around. I love being part of that community.

What impact has technology had on your work?

Very positive. Most especially to network and market my work. Casting a wide “‘Net” increases potential opportunities and success.

Where do you get inspiration for your cartoons?
I look around …I listen. It’s not a very complex process. Things kind of click. “There’s a cartoon in ‘that’.”, and off I go.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’m going to keep doing what I do best and see where that takes me. I think I will have made significant gains artistically and professionally.

What’s the dream ambition?

Syndication and widespread merchandising of “Celebrity Clerks”

Does fame attract you?

Not particularly. I enjoy getting positive feedback from my peers and non-artists alike. Both have equal value to me.

How do you rate yourself as a cartoonist.

8 out of 10. I’m always learning and evolving. I like that.

What makes a good cartoonist?

Self-belief and good drawing ability. Standing out from the crowd.

Three words to describe yourself?

Observant, creative, experienced.

Hobbies and Interests?

Shameless self-promotion and historical documentaries.

Favourite/most inspiring cartoonist?

Berkeley Breathed, creator of “Bloom County”. Great characters, witty, intelligent social commentary.

Tools of the trade?

Humour with an askew twist

Best and worst piece of work?

Ultimately, that’s for the audience to decide. I do what I can to the best of my ability every time out and put it out there. On a different level, I’ll look back on some work from six months ago and think “Yeeeesh…” I think that happens with most artists. It’s a good sign of growth. I’ll do that six months from now too.

Any Tips or advice to share with aspiring designers?

Please yourself first. Be unique
Don’t take rejection personally, it’s an education.
Never stop seeking advice from those with more experience.

————–

-Interview

Welcome to Design Splat Nicole!

Tell us a bit about what you do and your brand:

Nicole Gill Lingerie is a bespoke brand which specialises in authentic steel boned corsets and luxury lingerie pieces, using only the most elegant silks and laces. Each corset is handmade to exact measurements, ensuring that the body is shaped to perfection with an exquisitely cinched waist and silhouette. I aim to create unique lingerie pieces that make every woman feel elegant and beautiful.

Where did the idea for your brand come from?

I have always wanted to own a boutique and sell my own garments. After graduating from De Montfort University, I decided that this was the best time for me to get the ball rolling!

What type of lingerie?

I design and make steel boned corsets which cinch in the waist by 3-4 inches. I also create elegant lingerie pieces, including bras, briefs and nightwear, which have vintage influences.

Who is your target audience?

My target audience is anyone that wants to treat themselves to something special; I wouldn’t want to limit myself to a specific age range. My aim is to supply women with the tools to accentuate the silhouette, whilst maintaining an elegant and feminine style.

Do you have your lingerie in any stores yet?

Not at the minute, but I am having interest from a few stockists!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would love to have my own boutique where anyone can come and buy bespoke corsets, designed and made especially for them. Meanwhile, being stocked by a variety of boutiques all over the world.

Anything big planned for your collection? Anything else being added? What can we look forward to from the collection?

I was very careful when designing this collection; I wanted it to include a wide variety of products whilst not repeating myself. I feel that I have finalised the use of these fabrics and shades.

How do you rate yourself as a lingerie designer?

Its difficult to rate yourself, hopefully sales will portray how skilful I am!

In your eyes what makes a good fashion designer?

A good fashion designer has to have an eye for detail. I also feel that they have to have good colour co-ordinating skills. With lingerie- fit has to be everything!

Do you think the Fashion industry is difficult to break into?

I would say it is one of the most difficult fields to get in too. More and more talented students graduate each year and each are competing for the same jobs. It’s all about luck and waiting for an opportunity to come along.

What do you think it takes to become successful in the design industry?

It takes a lot of talent as well as skills; I would also say that patience is essential; especially when starting out. Networking is a must; it’s all about who you know!

What to you is the most important aspect of creating a garment, the planning, design or implementation and why?

Probably the design aspect, which is also my favourite process. This is where the foundation of the collection comes together, the silhouette is created in the mind and then the fabrics and trims all have to be decided.

What drives you/give you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

I am very passionate about my collection and I really want people to see it and enjoy it. I am very driven and I will complete the task set for me.

Does fame attract you?

I guess everyone is attracted to fame. I would rather my brand and designs are well know. I would love to see one of my corsets on a celebrity!

Where does your inspiration come from for your designs?

I find inspiration in a vast range of things; however my new collection is based upon the original and classic tea-party in Wonderland. The collection includes tight-laced corsets, vintage style briefs, unique bralette’s and feminine nightwear pieces. The designs feature chiffon ruffles, steel bones and delicate bows. I took inspiration from the tea-party scene because I have always loved the stories of Alice’s adventures; I wanted to create a cute yet vintage collection.

Where can we buy your clothes?

For now, my garments are available at http://www.nicolegill.com!

Three words to describe yourself?

Creative, Determined, Enthusiastic

Hobbies and other interests?

I love travelling to exotic places, anything to do with fashion, going to the cinema and to the gym.

Favourite Lingerie Designer?

I love Ell and Cee, their garments are beautiful.

Tools of the trade?

My amazing sewing machine, over locker and the latest addition is my eyelet machine! I’m very lucky to have a web designer as my fiancé and my sister is my model. I work them very hard!

Any Tips or advice to share with aspiring designers?

Keep on going, if you have creativity and talent don’t give up. The right opportunity will come along!

Today we are having a catch up with Chazz Thomas who was previously featured on Design Splat here! Chazz enjoys photography and Web development and this is the career path she hopes to take! Enjoy!

——————

Since I last spoke to Design Splat, things have taken a different turn! I got married, and I am starting to realise where my talents lie. Whilst still staying in web design and multimedia, I have branched off and become my own trade, CT Media.

CT Media specialises in web design using technologies such as CSS, PHP and HTML. However, that’s not the only thing I have been up to. I’ve also been branching out into digital photography, after having several comments about having a keen eye. I like to take photographs and I try not to edit any of them, especially not heavily, as I believe that if a photo is a good photo you should not have to edit them.

I have been working with local models and bands, as well as artists. I have started to get a larger list of clients, although still very small for the time being. Several people that I collaborate with regularly is Isobel Collins, for her Bizzy Babies tie-die clothes website, Lady Noctis for her modelling photography, and Angel Illustrations as webmaster for his fan-base website.

I’m always on the lookout for new talent to feature on Design Splat, and this one was a great find! On the newsfeed on facebook I saw some very well composed and excecuted images. I clicked the album and went on a search for the photographer and found todays Design Splat feature which is 16 year old Elliot Newton! I fell in love with his style and work! Check it out – his work speaks for itself!

———–

-Interview

Welcome to Design Splat Elliot!

Thank you for the opportunity!

To get the readers started tell us a bit about what you do:

I am a 16 year old student located in the South Wales area with an ambition to progress with photography in the future. I will work on many styles of photography, which can vary from fashion, to landscape to motorsport.

How did you get into Photography?

My father bought a Sony DSLR camera about 4 years ago and I, with no real hobby at the time, I thought id give it a try, and people started to comment on the photographs I took and it developed from there. I have recently upgraded to a new camera which will serve me as well as the old one no doubt. I was simply constantly taking photographs of anything and anyone.

What aspect of Photography?

My passion is Photography in Motorsports and Automotive, I have been brought up in a family which is, literally fueled by all things automotive, therefore I am good at taking a simple photograph of a car, but also giving a more artistic flare to it. As well as Automotive, I love to travel and have always taken photographs along the way, travelling to Dubai & Monaco to name a few. Also Fashion photography has began to enter my life, I have been asked by fashion designers in Universities in the area to photograph their work. Overall I feel I can work in any aspect, but I am enthusiastic in all my work.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years time I would like to see myself working with either a photography company or freelance, although my dream would be to work for a magazine or newspaper as a photographic journalist.

Freelance photographer/Own business or working for a company?

I’m a freelance photographer with a newly produced website which will hopefully be selling prints directly from the site. I would love, later on in life join together with other photographers and make a living out of photography, doing something which you adore doing and getting paid for it is the ultimate.

What drives you/gives you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

As fake as it sounds, I am driven by the reactions of peoples faces when they see my work, I feel some of my photographs are unique and eye-catching, and something which tells a story about the photo. I keep at photography because every time you go to a location or event, it will always be different, and you will return home with a new story to share.

Can you recall the first photo you took that made you go WOW!?

One of the first photographs i took with my Camera was at a motorsport event, where a driver had lost control at high speed at took another car with it, smashing into the tyre wall at nearly 120mph I was there with the photos, like I said, this told the story for the day. It was an incredible moment, spectators were silent and waiting for the drivers to emerge, which thankfully they did. But it showed to me how something that you can miss with the blink of an eye, can be captured on a camera and kept forever.

Does fame attract you?

The thought of being known for my work is attractive, to be appreciated by people is an extremely good feeling.

How do you feel about photo manipulation?

I feel a photograph can be edited to ones wants if they are asking for a specifc alteration, but some photopraphs are heavily manipulated which changes the photo completely, I feel a photograph should be taken to the best of the photographers ability before editting, as it should come as a last resort. However I feel that if a shadow or small object is obstructing the shot, it can be changed.

How do you rate yourself as a photographer?

I rate myself as a young photographer with a passion to progess, I am happy with the shots I take, I know they can be improved, and I am willing to take a persons critism onboard.

What makes a good photographer?

The ability to see an object or landscape differently to the normal person, bringing a more artistic feeling to a photograph.

Do you think the Photography Industry is difficult to break into? Are you worried about the amount of competition with more and more people becoming photographers?

Being 16 and trying to get into the photography business is hard, as not many businesses or workers take you seriously, with good evidence of photography work, they still feeling someone more experienced would be better, and sometimes I agree, someone who is well known or experienced may do a better job, but a budding photographer may have revolutionary ideas which may lead to something big. I feel everyone should be given the chance to show their work.

Three words to describe yourself?

Enthusiastic, Happy & Passionate.

Hobbies and other interests?

Motorsports, Travelling, Surfing.

Favourite photographer?

Always looking at different photographers, dont really have a favourite!

Any Tips and tricks or wise words you want to share with aspiring Photographers?

Im not really one to give advice, just take your time and enjoy every photograph you take.

Tools of the trade?

Old: Sony A100
New: Canon 500D

Best and worst photo you’ve taken??

I dont really have a favourite, or least favourite, i just love photography!

Today we are having a catch up with John Davis who has been previously featured on Design Splat here! He is an extremely talented bodypainter with a strong creative mind! Check out his new images, new website and pop along to the Welsh Face & Bodypainting Festival!

——————

Hi there!!

I have been asked to update what’s been happening in my little corner of the world of paintyness since i last did the interview for the blog.

Some of you that know me will realise how hard this is for me, even though i am big and loud I find it very difficult to blow my own trumpet or do the whole look at me thing but here goes.

Just after the last blog we had yet another fantastic Welsh Face and Bodypainting Festival of which I was really proud to be part of and cant wait for this years Festival on the 23-27 August: http://www.welshfestival.webs.com

I have been very lucky in my own work and veered even more towards totally using the airbrush in my work, again being lucky in working with some amazing photographers and some out of this world models, the resulting pictures I hope speak for themselves.

Again very luckily i have had a number of articles in magazines , both online and in print , so it seems someone does like my work after all.

What does the future hold, well I have the next Welsh Festie to get my teeth into, 2 galleries to prepare my work for to be exhibited (think that means I am an artist now lol), a film I am painting for in August and if that is enough I have to help put together a book of images of my work, so all in all its been a good twelve months.

There have been high’s and low’s over the last year but that is the same as everyone else, kept some good friends, made some more, hoping to make even more over the next year, having a ball painting people, so what’s there to complain about, very little, I am living the dream, might not be your dream but it’s mine and I for one cant complain about that nor shall I.

Hope you all enjoy the new work, and wish everyone well in all their own endeavours.

May you all get all that you work for, some of what you wish for, most that you desire, but all that you deserve.

John

——-

Whether you want hot pictures, to show an ex what he’s missing, confidence boost or pics to look back on in years to come then Anna Kelle is the photographer for you!

——

Since our last interview, lots of exciting projects and events have been going on!

Ive now added another studio/location to my base- I’m also shooting 2 days per week in West Midlands along with my regular clients in Cardiff – Ive had a huge welcome from lots of local girls/models and its going absolutely fantastic there. The people are lovely/locations are superb and am starting to create lots more hot glamour images.

Im also involved in lots of fashion shows/events and exhibitions across the UK showcasing my work, and once again, have had lots of success doing so and it’s also great fun

In Cardiff, I held a charity event for 2 charities close to my heart NSPCC and Help for Heroes, I really would like to thanks everyone who attended as it was such a fun evening and we made lots of money while simply partying. I gave away a couple of free photo shoots to local girls, and look forward to shooting them over the next couple of weeks.

I have another big project which I’m currently working on at present, that will be announced sometime towards end of the year .
