Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Bex!

To get the readers started tell us a bit about what you do:

My name is Bex Saunders, I’m 15 and I’m a multi-award winning photographer from Hampshire, UK.

How did you get into Photography?

I had some spare money and so I decided to buy a camera. It was a rubbish camera that constantly ran out of charge but it made me realise that I really like taking photos.

What aspect of Photography?

I love taking portraits as you can tell a person’s character just by looking at a photo of them. Most of my portraits are black and white as I think portraits are my emotional and raw without colour.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I hope to see myself living in London and working for magazines like Vogue.

Freelance photographer/Own business or working for a company?

I’m currently freelance but I’m trying to expand my buissess

What drives you/gives you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

Photography can be hard and competitive but that’s what makes it fun. If I didn’t have drive I would have given up a long time ago.

What obstacles – if any, have you encountered along the way?

For a while I didn’t have an SLR camera and I found that people looked down on me. They would often say things like “Oh look, it’s another person with a cheap camera that calls themselves a photographer!”

Can you recall the first photo you took that made you go WOW!?

No, I don’t.  However, I do remember thinking how amazing I was when I first got interested in photography and looking back at the photos they are rubbish!

If you could photograph/have a shoot with anyone who would it be?

I really want to work with the models Ann Ward & Allison Harvard because their looks are perfect for my style of photography.

Does fame attract you?

Yes, it does.

How do you feel about photo manipulation?

On the whole I feel it’s okay as long as the time isn’t changed too much. I get very annoyed at people who alter their image completely and then claim it’s not edited. I tend to only tweak the lighting/colour of my images.

How do you rate yourself as a photographer?

I don’t like comparing my work to other people’s because when I do I find that I’m never satisfied with my images.

What makes a good photographer?

I think a good photographer can see the world through a lens; they can draw inspiration from everyday live.

Do you think the Photography Industry is difficult to break into? Are you worried about the amount of competition with more and more people becoming photographers?

I do get worried sometimes and I find myself questioning whether I can do this, but then I tell myself that I’ve already come a long way. I’m a competitive person by nature so that helps a lot.

Three words to describe yourself?

Quirky, offbeat & creative.

Hobbies and other interests?

Photography takes up a lot of my time so I havn’t had the chance to find anything else that interests me.

Favourite photographer?

Fatih Alkan, his work is very intense and dark.

Any Tips and tricks you want to share with aspiring Photographers?

Don’t give up! You have to keep advancing at all times which can be tiring but it’s worth it in the end.

Tools of the trade?

Sony A200, macro filters, 18-70mm kit lens.

Best and worst photo you’ve taken?

I don’t have a favoruite image as I’m always looking to improve. When it comes to images that I don’t like I simply retake them so I can’t pinpoint one images as being my worst.
