Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Josh Wayman – Kandee Shoes!

Tell us a bit about what you do and your brand:

I left school with no qualifications and did not pursue design whatsoever. I then trained as a hairdresser which I did not enjoy at all. Kandee came around on a random sunday afternoon, I was bored, so I designed some shoes, many which featured in our first collection. I then had those designs made into samples and it all just went from there really. Kandee is an affordable and fashion forward brand. I didn’t want to create shoes which were easily available on the market from another
designer. It is important to have a different selling point and I think Kandee does that very well, as I was always after the inspired by candy look but were not unwearable and silly. I have always loved designing, however I did not think I’d get anywhere from it…

Where did the idea for Kandee Shoes come from?

I wanted to create a label which was fun, different, inspiring and affordable and this is all evident in Kandee shoes.

What type of shoes do you create?

All our shoes are very different. We design shoes which you can not easily find on the market now. This is the most important aspect of our designs.

Who is your target audience?

The Kandee Woman is anyone who are brave enough to wear shoes which are bold, unique and sky high!

Do you have your items in any stores yet?

Currently, Kandee has been approached by stores throughout the UK, Europe, USA and the Far East. However, we are not looking at these opportunities until the end of this year. We want Kandee to be available directly from the ‘designer’ so to speak to keep customer contact with our consumers at this time. But this will change, and we are looking at being
stocked into worldwide stores with our Spring/Summer 2012 collection – so watch out…

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully in one of my shoe stores overseeing the business and having a fun whilst doing it.

Anything exciting in the pipeline for the Kandee Shoes brand?

I want Kandee to be a lifestyle brand. So we are working on other lines, and we are also in talks with major candy brands about possible collaborations.  So it is all very exciting!

How do you decide on new design styles?

It comes out of no where. I go with my gut instinct and go with it! If I think it will work, I will develop the samples for production.  If not, that design is added to the shoe graveyard! The gut instinct is the finest sense we have.

How do you rate yourself as a shoe/fashion designer?

I don’t think that anyone can rate themselves – that is simply down to the public!

In your eyes what makes a good shoe/fashion designer?

I think to be a good designer you have to be different, not follow the commercial route as although the designs may sell quicker because they’re safe – the shoes are not fun and not unique!

Do you think the Fashion industry is difficult to break into?

Yes, I would say it is difficult and many would agree with that! The shoe industry is one of the most difficult, as it hard to compete with the larger brands. However, if you are meant to break the industry – you will. I don’t like to follow trends – I like to create them.

What do you think it takes to become successful in the design industry?

Hard work and time!

What to you is the most important aspect of creating an item, the planning, design or implementation and why?

Each stage is crucial, as it helps to achieve the finished product. Not one is anymore important, if you remove a stage in development – no shoes would be in production.

What drives you/give you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

Seeing people in Kandee shoes is the most thrilling and inspiring to keep going!

Does fame attract you?

I think that to be famous for your designs would be fantastic.

What’s exciting right now in fashion?

I’d have to say Kandee!

Where does your inspiration come from for your designs?

My childhood memory of candy! The visit to the corner sweet shops in England and seeings walls of different candy jars. Greedy I know!

Where can we buy your shoes?

Currently, the shoes are available online at http://www.kandeeshoes.com

Three words to describe yourself?

Hard working, Creative and Bossy!

Hobbies and other interests?

Kandee – my life revolves around brand and therefore this leaves very little time for hobbies! But, I do love travelling.

Favourite shoe designer?

I don’t have a particular favourite – I think that there are aspects of all designers which are interesting.

Tools of the trade?

Your mind-as thats were all the ideas come from. You can have all the physical tools to complete your trade but with designing without the mind and ideas – you really wouldn’t need those physical tools to create anything with.

Any Tips or advice to share with aspiring designers?

Do what you feel is right and do not conform!
