– Interview

Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Kelly!

Tell us a bit about what you do and your brand:

Klue by Kelly-Ann is a contemporary luxe Swimwear and Fashion label designed by creative director Kelly-Ann Garforth based in Yorkshire.

I studied fashion at Batley School of Art and Design before going on to study at De Montfort University, Graduating with a BA hons degree in Fashion and Contour design. Upon graduating i was selected by Lingerie buyer to showcase her swimwear collection on the graduate catwalk at the international Harrogate lingerie and swimwear show.

Klue by Kelly-Ann’s philosophy is based upon her love for classical forms. In her search for contemporary elegance, she aims to create a truly individual style with a mixture of colours, fabrics, textures and silhouettes, often bringing together contrasting materials or elements.

Where did the idea for your come from?

After Graduating from De Montfort University where I studied Fashion & contour design, I wanted to create my own brand. Combining the two elements of the course which I enjoyed I then decided to produce a new brand to enable me to express my ideas in creating women’s Fashion and swimwear.

Where does the name Klue come from?

Klue came from many different areas both from my own personality and the name I felt reflected my designs.

Every woman chooses there wardrobe to reflect an aspect of their personality and by what they choose to wear they are showing the world a “Klue” about themselves.

There are many different reasons why I choose the name for my brand this is just one of them.

What type of clothing?

Klue by Kelly-Ann is a contemporary luxe Swimwear and Fashion label.

The main idea behind my perception is a trans-seasonal timelessness and a glamorous day-to-night approach, envisioned to form an essential part of every woman’s wardrobe.

My eclectic and unconventional contemporary swimwear collections push the boundaries of swimwear design. Without compromising on comfort, we are sourcing the finest fabrics, ensuring exceptional workmanship in pursuit of extraordinary appeal and style.

Glamour is revisited with a bold and directional take, making every woman feel special, whether she’s on a yacht party, at a beach resort, or at her local spa.

Who is your target audience?

I envisage my customer to be a creative, modern woman who wants to seduce rather than reveal all at once. She is a pleasure-seeker with a unique sense of style, not defined by trends. She values sharp styling and sophistication.

Do you have your clothes in any stores yet?

Currently available from 12 boutiques both online and on the high street through the UK, Europe and America, please visit the stockists section of my website for more details.

New boutiques are continually being added and if you are stuck to find any and would just like the convenience of contacting me direct for an order, this is also an option.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I would like to be an established label and be stocking some of the worlds major online and high street boutiques and perhaps have my own boutique and be a recognised label.

Anything big planned for your collection of clothes?

On the 30th of June I will be showcasing my Swimwear collection ‘Cherish’ at the J Summer Fashion show at the Savoy in London. This is one of the most important shows i will have done to date and a chance to show my collection to industry professionals, celebrities and the media

The extravagant J Summer Fashion Show will be held in the world’s iconic celebrity destination, the Savoy London, on 30 June 2011. Showcasing the most spectacular collections by top designers from over 10 fashion capitals and welcoming the most celebrated press worldwide, the event is expected to be an international fashion phenomenon of 2011.

How do you rate yourself as a fashion designer?

I work hard and strive to achieve the best i can with every collection I produce and always push myself that extra mile to make each collection the very best it can be. I would not know how to rate myself really.

In your eyes what makes a good fashion designer?

They have to live and breathe what they do.

Strong drive.

Ambition.

Determination.

Do you think the Fashion industry is difficult to break into?

Yes it is but if every designer has their own niche, there’s so many areas of fashion to break into its just selecting the right part of the industry for your brand.

Do you think qualifications in Fashion are essential to succeeding in the fashion industry?

A Fashion degree qualification can teach you the skills and techniques you need to produce your ideas and develop them well. But you have to have a natural talent for fashion this is the main thing i believe you can be successful in the fashion industry without qualifications but qualifications will get you to a higher level and give you most skills you need.

What to you is the most important aspect of creating a garment, the planning, design or implementation and why?

If you have a strong theme that helps a clear direction on where you want to go with a new collection you have which fully inspires you and a good balance between designing and creating along one side each other as some of my best designs have been a collaboration between the designs i have done on paper and a design i created threw just moulage-ing on a mannequin or just seeing what shapes i can create from my fabric.

What drives you/give you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

As hard as it may be some days I always strive to achieve the best I possibly can and develop and grow my brand, I also have a very supportive network around me which always spurs me on if i have an off moment (like we all have from time to time)

Does fame attract you?

Recognition attracts me, i want my customers and clients to love what i produce as much as i do and thats what drives me.  I am also always very grateful and proud when other designers and industry professionals comment on my work.

Where can we buy your clothes?
