We are finishing off Photographer Week on a high today with 17 year old Matthew Payne who is a photographer in London. He specialises in People and Portraits and has captured some beautiful images. Enjoy!

Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Matthew as our 5th and final Photographer in Photographer Week!

Tell us a bit about what you do:

My name is MatthewJamesArthurPayne; I’m a 17 year old photographer from London, UK interested in People & Portraits.

How did you get into Photography?

My mother’s photography was a big part of my beginning. Early 2009 she brought a Canon EOS 450D which I would always  take out the house and snap some photos with,  it took me 2 months before I decided to get my own camera (Canon EOS 1000D) and since then I have just been building up a portfolio.

What aspect of Photography?

I’m interested in People & Portraits

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully with a stronger portfolio, being involved more with the industry and hopefully become a signed photographer

Freelance photographer/Own business or working for a company?

What drives you/gives you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

Constructive and negative criticism – if someone thinks I’m incapable of doing something it pushes me to prove them wrong. I also like the thought of inspiring people

What obstacles – if any, have you encountered along the way?

I’m currently in one – Because I didn’t get my 5 “C” grades college wouldn’t let me do Art & Photography, I tried showing them my portfolio and that I had a strong interest in it but all they cared about was if I passed Science or Geography the teacher then turned around  and said “With your grades you won’t be successful” So at the moment I’m looking for an apprenticeship and the next step up in the industry.

Can you recall the first photo you took that made you go WOW!?

It would have to be one of my first images I took of my friend Abi; the lighting was good and it was my first black and white headshot

If you could photograph/have a shoot with anyone who would it be?

Charlotte Holmes –she has an amazing personality and isn’t a size 0

Does fame attract you?

How do you feel about photo manipulation?

At first I was against it because I felt like the photographer was cheating the viewers, however nearly everyone these days uses it and it’s harder to produce outstanding photographs without it.

How do you rate yourself as a photographer?

As a beginner I feel that my work is stronger than most, especially as I’ve only been shooting for just over a year.

What makes a good photographer?

Someone with a good eye that can create interesting images.

Do you think the Photography Industry is difficult to break into? Are you worried about the amount of competition with more and more people becoming photographers?

Photography is one of the hardest and most competitive industries out there so it is worrying however it wouldn’t be as enjoyable without a bit of competition.

Three words to describe yourself?

Ambitious, Creative, Artistic

Hobbies and other interests?

Other than photography none.

Favourite photographer?

David Lachapelle – his work is so creative and amazing to look at.

Any Tips and tricks you want to share with aspiring Photographers?

With practice comes perfection

Tools of the trade?

Canon EOS 1000D Body
Canon 18-55mm
Canon 55-200mm
Camlink tripod
-Interfit Lighting (Softbox & Umbrella)
-White Vinyl Backdrop

Best and worst photo you’ve taken?

I find it hard to pick a best photo because each time I shoot I feel that my photos are improving, my worst would have to be one of the first photos I took when starting photography. However I don’t have a lot that I dislike because if they’re that bad I won’t upload them.
