– Interview

Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Michael!

To get the readers started tell us a bit about what you do:

I’m a creative advertising and fashion photographer working national mainly doing work with fashion designers, boutiques, hair salon etc.. basically working with good looking people and making them look better.

How did you get into Photography?

I did a city in guilds in photography when I was taking my year out from uni and kinda builded on it from that. Went to uni did a media production degree then a degree in photography(2 degrees I know) it just kinda happened from there.

What aspect of Photography?

Fashion portraiture is my main thing, i’m good with people and portraying there character in still.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully working internationally for big fashion brands

Freelance photographer/Own business or working for a company?

I work freelance and have a small company

What drives you/gives you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

I used to have a sign above my desk which said I never wanted to be a wedding photographer. That driven me to the success I’ve had so far.

What obstacles – if any, have you encountered along the way?

Many , pretty much many shut doors or people not interested in your work. It’s quality and more so who you know and who you’ve worked for.

Can you recall the first photo you took that made you go WOW!?

It was during my degree I shot a girl covered in newspaper and it was just the best thing i’d ever done. Got me to the finals of the AOP student photographer of the year.

If you could photograph/have a shoot with anyone who would it be?

Kate Moss shes a classic although Lily Cole or Rose Huntington Whitley would be pretty cool as well.

Does fame attract you?

Yes I love fame, the idea of celebrity not in a vain way but I love the cultural significance to fame. Why not be a big fish in a big pond I say.

How do you feel about photo manipulation?

I like retouching if it’s done for a purpose , to bring that x-factor to a good image. If the image was planned to be manipulated as part fo the final image it a piece of that art work. What I don’t like is people using manipulation to make bad images look ok. You “can’t shine s#@%” so they say.

Do you prefer Studio or Location Shoots?

Loving location these days so much more unpredictable

How do you rate yourself as a photographer?

Never make my own judgements as i’m my biggest critic and barely like any of my work. So I always prefer opinions form my peers.

What makes a good photographer?

Having a creative visual idea and making it happen

Do you think the Photography Industry is difficult to break into? Are you worried about the amount of competition with more and more people becoming photographers?

The industry is difficult and I forever think it’s getting harder. However there is only gona be a number of great photographers so I strive to be great. There are loads of emerging photographers but good/great/amazing photographers are rare.

Three words to describe yourself?

Confused, crazy,  fun!

Hobbies and other interests?

American football, mixology.

Favourite photographer?

David lachapelle, visual genius

Any Tips and tricks you want to share with aspiring Photographers?

Find your style and develop that don’t worry about what others are doing?

Tools of the trade?

A camera…

Best and worst photo you’ve taken?

So many bad ones i’d be here all day. I have no favourite image I just have some I don’t hate.
