– Interview

Hello and Welcome to Design Splat Ryan!

Hello! 😀

To get the readers started tell us a bit about what you do:

I’m Ryan Bater, a 17 year old self-taught Photographer specialising in Fashion Photography.
Currently a full time student, located In South Wales.

How did you get into Photography?

Self-Portraiture, and Landscape Photography around the age of 15, 2009.

What aspect of Photography?

Fashion & Beauty.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Internationally published, & agency represented.

Freelance photographer/Own business or working for a company?

Freelance Photographer, being signed by an agent.

What drives you/gives you the ‘go’ to keep at it and do everything?

I know I’m good at what I do, and I only strive to get better, there is nothing I enjoy more than this, it’s my main interest & hobby. I’ve been published in magazines, and in many publications, I’ve shot numerous look book’s for designers, and If I can do that now, I can’t imagine what I’ll be doing in a few years time.

What obstacles – if any, have you encountered along the way?

There have been a lot of obstacles for me, mainly where I live, there are not any modelling agencies here, In Wales.
So I have to scout models a lot of the time if anything. Another obstacle for me is time and money, I’m currently a full
time student in college, so time to shoot is very little with the amount of work I am given. Money, is also an issue, as
I cannot afford the utmost professional and best of equipment, but I use what I have got, and in the best possible way that I can.

Can you recall the first photo you took that made you go WOW!?

Yes, it was of a beautiful, black model, NYane Lebajoa, it was my first ever ‘fashion’ shoot, and it went all very well,
& it was very exciting, the shot had amazing vibrant colours, and the overall photograph had an amazing depth
of field, and good framing.

If you could photograph/have a shoot with anyone who would it be?

Amandine Comparro & Lara stone.

Does fame attract you?

In some what way, yes.

How do you feel about photo manipulation?

It has it’s advantages and disadvantages, people over exceed the limits in using post production, some times it can look really great, some times it can look flat out awful. If used well, I’d consider it, but it takes a lot of practice, knowledge, and an ‘eye’ to create, and retouch an image, to ‘enhance’ it’s greater potential. Photo Manipulation as an art form, the same applies, I have seen so many amazing retouchers such as Ruud Van Dorn, and so many Fantasy Photo Manipulation artists such as Fat Puppy (do check her out!) I do use Photoshop, but I feel if ones not to use it, a style is much harder to create, and to ‘stand out’ under this competitive industry.

How do you rate yourself as a photographer?

I feel I have a long way to go until I’m at the level to rate myself as a good photographer, but I feel I’m on the right path,
a quarter of the way there, if anything. I’m not completely happy with everything about my work yet, In a few years time,

What makes a good photographer?

A good photographer is someone, capable of capturing something at it’s best, and in it’s possible way.
someone who understands light, and the important 5 elements of photography, but a good photographer,
most of all is someone with an amazing ‘eye’, all the technical skills follow after this.

Do you think the Photography Industry is difficult to break into? Are you worried about the amount of competition with more and more people becoming photographers?

Yes, it is VERY difficult to break into, but if you have self-belief, and passion, you are already half way there, you just need to believe in yourself and your work, and believe you can be someone. It just requires A LOT of work, nothing comes easy, unless you are in the right moment at the right time, you just need to push yourself and get your name on everything and anything, the younger you start out, the better. Am I worried? I am, and I am not, I believe my portfolio of work is at the point where I shouldn’t worry much at all, seeing many others the same age as me, if not much older
have a weaker portfolio than me.

Three words to describe yourself?

TALL, creative & passionate.

Hobbies and other interests?

Networking, Event’s & Fashion Shows, Designing.

Favourite photographer?

Kesler Tran.

Any Tips and tricks you want to share with aspiring Photographers?

-Network, it’s one of the best things you can possibly do.
-Work, keep working, and never stop.
-Practice, and lot’s of experience goes far.

Tools of the trade?

Canon EOS 500D
85mm 1.8
50mm 1.8
Canon 430 EX.
Photoshop CS5 Suite.
-Home Studio

Best and worst photo you’ve taken?

Very difficult to choose my best, but I love the one of a very classic, and elegant 16 year old model, Lucy Bell that I taken when I was around 16 years old.

My worst? not entirely sure, I only show the ‘good’ photographs publicly.
